How Many Underfloor Heating Loops Can One Thermostat Control?
One of the most common questions we receive when designing water underfloor heating systems is: how many loops can one thermostat control?
The short answer is: one thermostat can control multiple underfloor heating loops, provided the system is designed and wired correctly.
A thermostat does not normally control the water flowing through each pipe loop directly. Instead, it sends a signal to the underfloor heating control system, which opens the relevant actuators on the manifold. This means that one thermostat can control several loops at the same time when those loops form part of the same heating zone.
However, there is no single universal maximum number of loops that applies to every installation. The correct answer depends on the wiring centre, actuator capacity, thermostat type, room layout and heating requirements.

What Is an Underfloor Heating Loop?
A water underfloor heating system uses pipework installed beneath the floor. The pipe is divided into individual circuits, commonly known as loops.
Each loop starts at the flow side of the underfloor heating manifold, runs through the heated floor area and returns to the manifold. The manifold distributes heated water between these individual circuits and allows flow through the system to be balanced.
Larger rooms often require more than one loop. For example, a large open-plan kitchen and living area may require two, three or even more loops depending on:
- heated floor area

- maximum recommended loop length
This is completely normal. One room does not necessarily mean one loop.

For example, imagine a large open-plan kitchen requiring three separate pipe loops. If the entire room should operate at the same temperature and follow the same heating schedule, one room thermostat can be used to control all three loops.
A typical arrangement may look like this:
1 thermostat → 1 heating zone → 3 actuators → 3 manifold loops
When the room temperature falls below the thermostat setting, the thermostat calls for heat. Through the wiring centre or control system, the relevant thermal actuators are energised and open the corresponding manifold circuits. Depending on the system configuration, the controls can also enable the UFH pump and send a demand signal to the boiler or other heat source.

So, How Many Loops Can One Thermostat Control?
The practical answer is: as many loops as the compatible control zone is designed to operate safely — subject to the manufacturer’s electrical limits and the overall system design.
This is why it is important not to assume that every thermostat can control an unlimited number of loops.
For example, some Heatmiser wiring centres support up to six actuators per zone, while the Heatmiser UH6 is specified differently, with connections for up to four actuators per zone. Other manufacturers and control systems may have different limits.
Therefore, before connecting several loops to one thermostat, always check:
- maximum actuators permitted per zone
- maximum total load of the wiring centre
- actuator voltage
- thermostat compatibility
- wiring centre specification
- manufacturer instructions
The thermostat itself is only one part of the control arrangement.
Why Would One Room Need Several Loops?

If all four areas are genuinely used as one thermal zone, one thermostat may control all four actuators together.

You might have an 8-port manifold with eight loops but only four thermostats because some rooms require two loops each.
When Is One Thermostat for Multiple Loops a Good Idea?
Using one thermostat for multiple loops is often suitable when the loops serve:

- one open-plan area
- spaces with similar heat loss
- areas with the same floor construction
- spaces requiring the same temperature
- areas following the same heating schedule
A good example is a 45m² open-plan kitchen and dining room divided into three UFH loops. If the entire space is open and should maintain the same temperature, one thermostat controlling all three loops can be a sensible arrangement.
This keeps the controls simple while allowing the pipework to be divided into correctly designed circuits.
When Should Loops Have Separate Thermostats?
Multiple loops should not automatically be grouped together simply because they connect to the same manifold.
Separate thermostat control is usually preferable when loops serve rooms with different requirements, such as:
- bedroom and bathroom
- kitchen and lounge
- north-facing and south-facing rooms
- conservatory and internal room
- rooms with different floor finishes
- rooms used at different times
- spaces requiring different target temperatures
For example, a bathroom may need to feel warmer in the morning, while an adjacent bedroom may require a lower temperature overnight. Controlling both with one thermostat could reduce comfort and make the system less responsive to how the rooms are actually used.
Multi-zone UFH systems are designed to provide independent room or zone control, with thermostat demand operating the relevant actuators.
What Role Does the Wiring Centre Play?
The underfloor heating wiring centre is a key part of a multi-zone control system.
It typically connects:
- room thermostats
- thermal actuators
- UFH circulation pump
- zone valve, where applicable
- boiler or heat-source demand signal
When a thermostat calls for heat, the wiring centre activates the appropriate output for that zone. The connected actuators then open the relevant manifold circuits.
This is why the wiring centre specification matters so much when asking how many loops one thermostat can control. Different products have different numbers of zones, actuator outputs and electrical limits.
Do I Need One Actuator Per Loop?
In a typical individually controlled wet UFH system, each manifold loop that requires automatic zone control will normally have its own actuator fitted to the relevant manifold valve.
So, if one thermostat controls three loops, the arrangement may include:
- 1 thermostat
- 1 control zone
- 3 actuators
- 3 pipe loops
When that thermostat calls for heat, all three associated actuators can open together.
An actuator controls flow through its corresponding manifold circuit, while the wiring centre provides the link between thermostat demand and actuator operation.
Can One Thermostat Control an Entire Manifold?
Potentially, yes.
If the entire manifold serves one heating zone and the control equipment is suitable, one thermostat may control all relevant loops.
For example, a small extension could have:
- 4-port manifold
- 4 UFH loops
- 4 actuators
- 1 thermostat
This may work well if the whole area is open-plan and has similar heating requirements.
However, it would usually be less appropriate if those four loops serve four separate rooms. In that situation, individual room control may provide better comfort and flexibility.
Does a Heat Pump Change the Answer?
Not fundamentally.
Whether the UFH system is connected to a gas boiler, air source heat pump or ground source heat pump, the basic zoning principle remains similar: one thermostat can control multiple loops when those loops belong to the same heating zone and the control equipment supports the arrangement.
However, heat-pump systems require careful hydraulic and control design. Excessive zoning, low system water volume and rapidly changing flow conditions can affect operation, so the overall system should be designed around the specific heat source and manufacturer’s requirements.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A common mistake is assuming that one loop always requires one thermostat. This can lead to unnecessary controls in large rooms that simply need multiple pipe circuits.
The opposite mistake is grouping too many different rooms under one thermostat. This can create poor temperature control because the thermostat only measures the temperature where it is installed.
For example, if one thermostat in a warm south-facing living room controls loops in a colder hallway or north-facing room, the other areas may not receive heat when they need it.
The correct design should consider both:
