Traditional wet screed underfloor heating

Underfloor heating in traditional systems meets the needs of the most demanding customers.

Underfloor heating carried out in the so-called wet screed technology is very popular. It is even considered a traditional solution in surface heating technology.

The name “wet technology” comes from the method of installing the heating. Because the system plates along with the pipes, after installation, are poured with cement or anhydrite screed. This screed serves as the direct base for the final floor.

Installation of traditional underfloor heating

There are three methods of installing underfloor heating in a traditional system.

They differ in the way the pipes are mounted in the plate. It can be fixed on a special prefabricated plate with protrusions called egg crate castellated panel, using mounting clips, or using clips rails.

The thickness of the screed for wet underfloor heating system

Screed or self levelling typically used with wet underfloor heating systems can vary.

Depending on several factors such as the type of flooring, the insulation used and the specific requirements of the heating system.

A common thickness for the screed layer in such systems is typically around 50mm to 75mm (2 to 3 inches). This thickness allows for adequate embedding and coverage of the heating pipes while providing sufficient thermal mass for efficient heat transfer.

The thickness of the self-leveling compound applied over wet underfloor heating systems can vary. Depending on the manufacturer’s specifications and the specific requirements of your installation. Typically, self-leveling compounds are applied in layers ranging from 3mm to 10mm (0.12 to 0.4 inches) thick.

It’s essential to follow the recommendations provided by the manufacturer of the self-leveling compound you are using. As well as any guidelines provided by the underfloor heating system manufacturer. These guidelines will ensure proper coverage and performance of the heating system while achieving a level and smooth floor surface.

It’s important to consult with a professional installer or follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to determine the appropriate thickness for your specific application.
